Type 82 Kubelwagen (1943)

A lightweight, four-seat, rear-engined military off-road vehicle built using components from the civilian Type 1. It featured an open, unibody structure made of stamped steel panels, complete with a distinctive folding windshield, a canvas top, and removable side weather protection. Measuring approximately 3.74 m in length and 1.60 m in width with a 2.40 m wheelbase, the vehicle was compact and weighed around 725 kg in running order. It was powered by a rear-mounted, 1.1-liter, air-cooled, four-cylinder boxer engine producing 25 hp, mated to a four-speed manual transmission with reverse gear. Although power was transmitted only to the rear wheels, off-road capability was enhanced by independent torsion-bar suspension, high ground clearance, low weight, and a specially designed underbody that minimized the risk of snagging on the terrain. The front suspension utilized transverse torsion bars and independent control arms, while the rear featured a torsion-bar setup with swing axles. The vehicle rode on narrow tires with a standard road tread pattern—providing adequate traction on unpaved surfaces—and employed a fully mechanical braking system. With a top speed of approximately 80 km/h, the vehicle offered sufficient mobility for a light military transport on both roads and rough terrain. It accommodated a driver and three passengers, though the rear seats could also be used to carry equipment and supplies. The dashboard and controls were simple in design, and most mechanical components were engineered for field maintenance. The Kübelwagen combined low weight, simple construction, an air-cooled engine, independent suspension, and high ground clearance, making it a characteristic example of German light military vehicles from the World War II era.
