Uran Nuclear Power Plant
A modern nuclear power complex featuring power units equipped with two-loop pressurized water reactors. Each unit has an electrical capacity of approximately 1,500 MW and comprises a reactor plant, a turbine hall, a generator, and systems for cooling, power supply, control, and safety. The core of the power unit is a reactor with a thermal capacity of about 4,000 MW; its core contains 241 fuel assemblies made of uranium dioxide (UO₂) fuel rods. A controlled chain reaction generates heat, which is transferred to the water in the primary circuit. The coolant circulates at a pressure of approximately 15.5 MPa, remaining in a liquid state despite the high temperature. The reactor employs a two-loop configuration: two steam generators and four main circulation pumps facilitate coolant circulation between the reactor and the steam generators. Within these units, thermal energy from the primary circuit is transferred to the water in the secondary circuit, converting it into steam. The steam drives a multi-stage turbine connected to an electric generator, after which it condenses and returns to the steam generators as water. A separate cooling system linked to a seawater source is used to remove residual heat. A key feature of the reactor is its robust safety architecture, which includes four independent emergency injection channels, passive safety tanks, an in-containment water reservoir, and a combination of active and passive systems. The reactor and primary circuit equipment are housed within a massive, airtight containment structure designed to confine radioactive materials. The plant is also equipped with a digital control system, backup power sources, diesel generators, and battery systems. The complex’s layout separates the nuclear and turbine islands, while the external infrastructure comprises transformers, outdoor switchyards, pumping stations, pipelines, and utility systems. The reactor has a design service life of approximately 60 years, and the interval between fuel reloads exceeds 18 months. A combination of high power output, a compact two-loop primary circuit, digital control, and multi-level safety systems is a key feature of the "Uran" NPP design.
