Tiger I German Heavy Tank (1942)

A German heavy tank from the World War II era that entered mass production in 1942. The vehicle features a welded hull with vertical side plates and a massive turret mounted at the front of the fighting compartment. The hull length is 6.3 m (8.45 m with the gun facing forward), the width is 3.7 m, the height is 2.93 m, and the combat weight is 56 tons. The frontal hull armor is up to 100 mm thick, while the sides and rear are up to 80 mm; the turret features frontal armor plates up to 100 mm thick. Its main armament is an 88 mm KwK 36 L/56 gun, mounted in the turret on a recoil system and equipped with a telescopic sight. A 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun is paired with the main gun, and a second machine gun is mounted in the front hull plate; the ammunition load includes several types of rounds. The power plant is located in the rear and consists of an HL 210 P45 gasoline engine producing 650 hp. Power is transmitted from the engine via a multi-plate clutch, a manual transmission, and final drives to the front-mounted drive sprockets. The running gear features large road wheels arranged in an overlapping (staggered) pattern, individual torsion-bar suspension, and wide tracks. The crew consists of five men: commander, gunner, loader, driver, and radio operator. The design also incorporates hatches, vision devices, a radio, fuel tanks, ventilation equipment, and a comprehensive system for accessing mechanical components. Combining powerful armament, heavy armor, and a complex suspension system, the Tiger I became one of the most recognizable heavy tanks of its time.
