T-34-85 Soviet Medium Tank (1944)

A Soviet medium tank from the World War II era, representing a modernized version of the T-34 featuring uprated armament, an enlarged turret, and improved crew ergonomics. The vehicle's primary distinguishing features were a new three-man turret with a commander's cupola—enabling more effective fire control—and an 85mm ZiS-S-53 tank gun capable of engaging armored vehicles and field fortifications. The tank retained the classic T-34 layout, with the driver's compartment at the front, the fighting compartment in the center, and the engine-transmission compartment at the rear. The hull was constructed from rolled armor plates set at optimal angles, ensuring efficient use of armor thickness and increasing the likelihood of shell ricochets. The running gear consisted of five road wheels per side, rear drive sprockets, and front idler wheels; wide tracks ensured relatively low ground pressure and good cross-country mobility. A V-2-34 diesel engine producing approximately 500 hp was installed in the rear compartment, coupled to a manual transmission. The tank achieved a top road speed of roughly 55 km/h and had an operational range of about 300 km, depending on operating conditions and configuration. The crew comprised five members: commander, gunner, loader, driver, and radio operator/machine gunner. In addition to the 85mm gun, the tank was equipped with two 7.62mm DTM machine guns. The T-34-85 combined relatively low weight, mobility, protection, and powerful armament for its class, while its design was optimized for ease of manufacture and mass production. Thanks to a balanced combination of firepower, armor protection, mobility, and ease of repair, the T-34-85 became one of the most iconic vehicles of Soviet tank design and is of significant interest as a detailed model for studying armored vehicle construction.
